What time do the Hongyadong lights turn on and off?
Hongyadong does not have one reliable year-round lighting schedule. Decorative lights normally become visible after dusk, but switch-on time, cutoff time and special displays can change with the season, events, maintenance and crowd controls. Arrive around sunset, photograph Hongyadong early in the evening and check same-day on-site or official notices before planning a late visit.
- Do not rely on an old fixed “19:00–22:00” schedule or a promised hourly light show.
- Qiansimen Bridge and public river-level viewpoints are common angles, subject to pedestrian and crowd controls.
- Xiaoshizi on Lines 1 and 6 and Linjiangmen on Line 2 are useful metro references for the Hongyadong area.
A safer Chongqing night photo plan
The previous article contained fixed lighting and show times that could not be treated as current. This guide now prioritizes a flexible route and same-day verification.
1. Arrive before full darkness
Reach the Hongyadong area around sunset so you can scout a legal viewpoint before the busiest period. Weather, haze and river fog can affect the result more than a precise clock time.
- Capture the blue-hour transition first, then the illuminated skyline after dark.
- Check on-site notices instead of assuming the lights will remain on until a particular hour.
2. Hongyadong and Qiansimen Bridge
Use Hongyadong as the first stop, then move only through open public walkways toward a Qiansimen Bridge or riverside angle. Police or venue staff may redirect pedestrians during peak crowd control.
- Keep tripods out of narrow stairs, entrances and emergency routes.
- Protect equipment from rain and condensation; Chongqing surfaces can become slippery.
3. Continue to Jiefangbei if conditions allow
Jiefangbei provides a contrasting street-light and skyline environment within the same central area. End the route early if visibility, crowding or the last metro makes the next stop impractical.
- Use Xiaoshizi or Linjiangmen as the return metro reference, depending on your final position.
- Confirm the station-specific last train before starting a long exposure session.
